The New Review - Sucker Punch - DVD/Blu-Ray

The New Review

"Sucker Punch" directed by Zack Snyder
Starring Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino(I think that's everyone in the pic above)

Jump with me......

Background Check: Well... Zack Snyder... what can we say about him? He is the genius that directed Frank Miller's "300"...... he gave us a wonderful, visually stunning adaptation of Alan Moore's "Watchmen"... not to mention his debut film was a great zombie flick "Dawn Of The Dead"... he is also the guy that is directing the reboot known as "Superman: Man of Steel"...... Impressive list...... well, what about "Sucker Punch"?

Concept: A young girl is admitted into an asylum by her abusive step-father, after her mother has passed, and she accidental killed her younger sister. This weird "home for insane wayward girls", it's a cover for something more devious. She is forced to utilize a fantasy to make her feel stronger, and to help her cope with her new environment.

Execution

Cast: This can be considered a guy's movie because of the group of barely legal hotties that this movie centers around. Each girl brings their own personality to this movie, while none of them really stand out except Emily Browning, but she's the main character.... and Carla Gugino makes a good headmistress...... Score: 7/10

Characters: Lackluster here too. Like I said, each girl brings their own personality to the movie, both as their own girl, and within BabyDoll's fantasies. The "badguy", Blue, you begin to hate him right away, and wish ill upon him, but it seems to be an after thought in this movie... Score: 4/10

Story: This is one point where this movie shines. It's also where it goes from being a guy's movie, to girl's movie. Girls sent to an insane asylum, forced to be dancers and hookers, one utilizes an amazing fantasy world to help her copy with it. It's an excellent idea, though it may be close to being used before... Score: 8/10

Visual: Another good point of this movie. The asylum is dark, damp, somber... exactly the way BabyDoll would feel while she's in it. BUT her fantasy world, bright, colorful, action-packed... guns blazing, dragons, robots, samurai statues, war, destruction, empowering...... if you've seen the visual magic of "300" or "Watchmen", you know what Zack Snyder is capable of...... Score: 10/10

Sound: Hand in hand with visual. Guns, dragons, cold hard steel......... what else can you say... Score: 9/10

Humor: There is none, which is what it needs. The real life sequences are filled with sadness. The Fantasy scenes are filled with empowerment. No humor needed. I will admit, alittle would've been good, but still not needed... Score: 9/10

Action: During the fantasy scenes, there is enough action in them to make Jean Claude Van-Damme weep in his pillow at night. Did I mention gorgeous girls kicking not major ass but GENERAL ASS........... lots of action...... plenty of action.......... get the point?... Score: 10/10

Flow: I was waiting for this one...... this movie has no flow. None whatsoever... as you transition from reality to fantasy, it breaks it up awkwardly, even though you know it's coming, and you understand why... but it just feels strange, both going into and coming off of those sequences...... much to the point where even I was getting alittle bored... Score: 1/10

Closure: Yeah, this movie had closure, but it's a horrible, confusing trip getting there. You understand the ending, and exactly what has happened, but it's one of the worst case scenarios, and my the time the ending happens, do you really care? I did to a point, but I was so far into the maze, it didn't make as much impact as it should have...... Score: 3/10

Extra Oomph: Did I mention hot chicks kicking ass? Aside from that, this movie fall alittle flat, even though, through lack of character development, you want to know how it ends...... but Zack Snyder left us some visual symbolic clues into the fate of BabyDoll...... didn't see them? if you can bear to watch it again, they come at the end of both of the first two fantasy world scenes... you'll see what I mean......... but it's not enough to carry this movie to any finish line....... Score: 5/10

FINAL SCORE: 66/100            According to BCSC, that's an F

Conclusion: It was a decent movie, for what it was, but clearly Zack Snyder's worst so far. It may be that he wanted to get it done to start work on "Superman: Man of Steel", but it doesn't change the fact that this movie...... as a movie...... is nothing more than a coaster.....

It's all a matter of opinion: I cannot stress enough that THIS is MY opinion, you can either agree with me or not... I don't have to justify my opinion, because *clear throat* that's what this blog is about. Whether I like it or not doesn't mean you have to or not...... it's just my justification for giving you all MY recommendation...... which leads me to my FINAL JUDGMENT

FINAL JUDGMENT: "Sucker Punch" is a visual masterpiece, sadly it's all it is. If you want a movie that won't leave you behind, then I would steer clear. But if you love visually stunning films, then this one is for you. As for a recommendation for everyone, if you haven't seen it, this one is worth a rent... nothing more... Did I mention the hot girls kicking general ass?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There it is folks, "Sucker Punch" got a 66....... Pathetic... I'm glad I watched it, now I wished I could forget about it....

What's next? I dunno

When it's over, come back and thank me...
