The New Review - Thor - Theater

Marvel's Version of the Norse God of Thunder

The New Review
Marvel's "Thor"
Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins
Directed by Kenneth Branagh

Background Check: This Thor... Norse God of Thunder... only Marvel's version, which is directly derived from actual Viking lore... continuation of The Avengers set-up movies... if you don't or didn't know who Thor is... don't worry, this film is perfect for that...

Concept: Thor is the Norse God of Thunder, son of Odin Allfather... Thor makes a huge vain mistake, and in such is stripped of his Godly power, made mortal, and banished to Earth...... he needs to reclaim what is his to stop the evil plot plaguing his homerealm for Asgard...

Execution

Cast:
Chris Hemsworth was an amazing choice for Thor, and Anthony Hopkins was powerful(pun intended) as Odin, and Natalie Portman was as beautiful as always, but the two "thieves of the show" are Idris Elba as Heimdall the Gatekeeper... he made Heimdall a major badass, in more ways than one... and Tom Hiddleston as Loki the Norse God of Mischief... Tom was strong in Loki's weaknesses, he was creepy without being a monster, and they say actions speak louder than words, then what Tom was doing just with eyes alone, he was screaming loud enough you could hear it from Asgard(see what I did there)... the cast was strong, weak in some spots, by made up for in others... 9.5/10

Characters: Marvel has so many wonderful characters, and the citizens of Asgard are definitely no different... from powerful Odin, to arrogant Thor, to Lady Sif and the Warriors Three, to Heimdall, to the Frost Giants, and even the massive Destroyer Armor... and as amazing as the Asgardians are, the humans are made equally as unique, but plain in comparison... not to say those humans are plain, but character development reigns supreme with the Asgardians and no the humans... and that's fine because the movie is NOT about them... 9/10

Story: As Origin stories go, this was amazingly put together, it made sense, as far as Superhero/God movies go... it was engaging, well written, and each plot turn was made nearly flawless...... except... is it just me, or did Jane Foster fall in love with Thor way too quickly(and vice versa)... I understand that Thor is an extremely cut Viking God... I understand that there really wasn't anyone as hot as Natalie Portman in Asgard... but seriously...... other than that, it was an awesome story, with NO plot holes... 9/10

Visual: Same as the characters, the difference between Earth and Asgard where like comparing plain bread to cinnamon French Toast...... but that isn't a bad thing... Asgard is beautiful, almost makes you forget that Natalie Portman is in this movie... the BiFrost Bridge is a wonder to watch... and the whole environment is huge and amazingly put together... watching Thor use his powers, and the destruction caused by the... uh... Destroyer Armor was God-like...... but where this move shine is the visual ambiance... now, if you don't know what that means, you've never watched Jaws... when the music played, you knew the shark was coming... same with this, but you don't know exactly what... example, it's dark and rainy during a particular scene(don't want to spoil it), and it adds to the way the scene unfolds... almost mood lighting... 9.5/10

Sound: nothing too out there, or course highlighting the powers, and the fights, and such... nothing too extreme, nothing too forgettable... nothing unforgettable... it was amazing, without having anything in particular that stands out... 8.5/10

Humor: there are spots in the movie where you have a good laugh, some even environmental-based humor around Thor adjusting to Earth... if you liked the humor in Iron Man 1&2, then it is here where the timing proved it... and serious when the movie needs it... if you can stand Viking humor, great... if you just can't get it, then at least you'll know when to laugh... 9/10

Action: while there are some wonderful fight scenes, the scene with Lady Sif, the Warriors Three, and Thor vs The Destroyer Armor I thought was awesome, but ended strangely... it might just be me... other than that, I thought it was all so well choreographed that it was important to the development of the story AND the characters involved... 9.5/10

Flow: surprising, with the BIG flashback idea, this movies flows very well... it doesn't need to pick up, and it never really slows down... never breaks up... and not once do you go 'why was that important?'... 10/10

Closure: the ending is a little strange, but it all makes perfect sense... leaves a slight loose end, but again, this is the next step toward The Avengers... and considering the Director is Kenneth Branagh, I AM NOT surprised that we were given a Shakespearean-esque ending to the movie... such an enormous movie in general, and such a subtle ending, I have to say that even I was impressed... 10/10

Extra Oomph: I give it to the direction. Kenneth Branagh is an amazing actor, and even a better director, anyone who has seen Mary Shelley's Frankenstein(the one with Robert DeNiro as the monster) can agree with that... and as soon as I found out that Branagh was directing Thor, I knew it was going to be amazing, and he did not disappoint... he did such an amazing job, that if they do make a Thor 2(and it should happen with the ending of this one), then I couldn't see ANYONE take his place... 10/10

Final Score: 94/100      Pretty Damn good

Conclusion: as far as Kenneth Branagh movies, it's one of his best... as far as Superhero movies go, it's on par with X-Men and Iron Man... aside from the falling in love too quickly bit, there were no plot holes, and leaves you wanting to see what more can come from this... I'm already waiting for this movie to hit Blu-Ray...
It's all a matter of opinion: I cannot stress enough that THIS is my opinion, you can either agree with me or not... I don't have to justify my opinion, because *clear throat* that's what this blog is about. Whether I like it or not doesn't mean you have to or not...... it's just my justification for giving you all MY recommendation...... which leads me to my FINAL JUDGMENT

FINAL JUDGMENT: the God of Thunder rules... it is a beautiful rendered, well directed, well written movie that deserves your attention... if you gotta go to the bathroom, either hold it or piss yourself... because if you get up to go, you will be kicking your own ass to the bathroom, and all the way back to your seat...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well there you go, Marvel's "Thor" gets a 94... a 94!!!!!, that's better than good...

I'm hoping to have a review for X-Men: First Class soon... I'll keep you posted...

When it's over, come back and thank me...

Tune in... there will be blood more...
